On Saturday and Sunday, Al-Quadir Marsh took a
crash course in how to transmit photos and videos from the Wiz
Kid Laptop to the Wiz Kid office computer over the WiFi Internet.
He will be putting these skills to use every night of his time at
Camp Greenlane, to upload the photos and videos of the day's
events so we can pass them on to you as soon as we receive them.
The band crew spent hours together on Sunday,
the day before the start of the Last Week of Summer Band Camp in
East Orange, so they could make the secret special Band Camp
T-Shirts that will be issued to band members at the end of the
summer. The design is top secret and
won't be revealed just yet, but here are photos of some of the
assembly line work that went on most of Sunday afternoon and far
on into the night. To see more of the TOP
SECRET Band Camp T-Shirt Project, click HERE!

Every penny
counts! It's all going for a good cause: to help someone who
can't afford it to go to Camp Greenlane on Thursday of this week,
courtesy of all the Band Members who participated in the
"tagging" collections every day. They gave of their
time and their efforts to raise the funds penny by penny, dollar
by dollar, not asking anything of the government or the
taxpayers, but only of those good local citizens who freely
donated to the cause. The count is being taken by Dashon Jackson
(left) and Al-Quadir Marsh (right), while the other campers are
outside having lunch.
The money
counters have some beautiful music to listen to as they count the
money. In the back of the Band Room, flautists Allan Theodore
and Adulfulyne Padmore are
practicing a difficult piece of music: the Concerto in G
Major by W.A. Mozart. This is during their own free time,
and just for fun! Give a listen!

Continuing our focus on Shaquel
Peters... in past years, Shaquel played the baritone horn, but
recently he began playing the tuba, and the marching band
equivalent of a tuba, the Sousaphone. He is section leader of the
sousaphones and the section has a nice solo in one of the marches
they will be playing which I will try to record for you.

Al-Quadir couldn't find any interesting things
to take photos of that you haven't already seen before, so I took
this photo of him practicing for the Talent Show that will be
held at Camp Greenlane in Pennsylvania one day next week. The
trick he is working on is his newest invention, "Ace
Chaser", which will be available for sale on the Magic Nook in Wizards' Journal #21, but it will
receive its first public performance by Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki at Camp
Greenlane.

You can tell that it's the day before Camp
Greenlane by the luggage beginning to pile up at the door to
Cicely Tyson School. All the campers had to bring everything they
want to take to Camp Greenlane to be checked by the Band Parents
and then locked up in the school overnight. Tomorrow, everything
will be organized in order to load quickly onto the buses to Camp
Greenlane when they arrive.

Inside the school, section leaders take charge
of collecting the bags and putting them into school lockers for
overnight storage. They also check to make sure students labeled
every item of clothing and have their names on every bag they are
bringing.

Students also have to pack boxes of food for
seven full days of Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, plus everybody's
favorite box that gets special attention- the Snack Box!

After the packing and storage is complete, there
is still time for some last minute drill and practice. Our
numbers have sadly diminished, because not everyone is able to
attend the away Camp experience of Camp Greenlane, owing to lack
of funds, illness, or other commitments. But there's no use
worrying about the things over which we have no control, and we
will concentrate on those band members who raised their own funds
and who are ready and eager to go! Tomorrow is the BIG DAY!
