Photo of Al-Quadir Marsh
Al-Quadir Marsh is currently the
one-and-only trumpet player for Central High School Marching
Band, in Newark, NJ. Yesterday, Central
played Shabazz High School and
Al-Quadir had a friend take this photo of him in uniform at the
game. Today, Al-quadir is hard at work photographing the members
of East Orange Unified Marching Band for their New Fall 2011
Gallery Photos, and also photographing
and videotaping the Band performing at the football game between
the East Orange Jaguars and the Irvington Blue Knights.

This first photo was
e-mailed in by Al-Quadir from his phone, just as the students
left Cicely Tyson School to march across town to Paul Robeson
Stadium.

The next photo was also
sent by phone just after the students were seated at the stadium.
Phone-in photos just let me know that all is well and I use them
to start the Web page for the game. The phone photos may or may
not still be here when Al-Quadir submits his final photos
directly from his camera, but if you checked in early to find out
what's happening, you'll see the latest updates and bits of
information as they are relayed to me.

Here's a similar photo to the one
Al-Quadir phoned in, but this one came from his camera so you can
compare the results. The Band has just reached the coerner of
William Street and North Clinton Street and from here it's
straight ahead to Paul Robeson Stadium.

Almost as soon as the Band
arrived and got into place, the football teams were out on the
field eager to begin the game. That meant that the band had to
hustle to get ready to play the Star Spangled Banner so
the game could officially begin.

The Band snapped to attention for
playing the National Anthem. Video below. Today was the first
event of the season that the band appeared in their full dress
uniforms. For those new to our band, the students wearing red
plumes are section leaders.

At the first touchdown of the
game, the crowd was roaring and so was the band. They put their
hands in the air and began to chant, "E.O!"

Before Half-Time, the East Orange
Band section leaders cross the field to meet and greet the
Irvington Knights Band, offering to let them sit on the East
Orange side of the stadium during the half-time performance so
they could see the show from the front, but they cordially
decline the invitation for reasons of their own. It is difficult
to tell the two bands apart because the uniform colors are so
similar, but all of our Band members are wearing their gold capes
and the front of the Knights uniforms are decorated with columns
of gold buttons, and their hat plumes are white, while ours are
red.

At half-time, the band marched
across to the opposite side of the stadium to make their entrance
onto the field. Notice Irvington's Blue Knights Band lined up in
the stadium behind them to watch the performance. Video below.
After the game, the entire band
marches back to Cicely Tyson School. You can see the
"tired" in their faces. It has been a long day, but
still they stand at attention while Mr. Goode gives them final
instructions for putting away their uniforms and instruments
before they can be dismissed.
Final Score: East Orange
Campus High 52 - Irvington High School 0

Our second photographer is
Elijah Goode, who currently plays sousaphone for the Clifton
Mustangs. The photo above was taken by Graeme Carmichael at the
game between Clifton High School and Teaneck High School on
September 16th, 2011. More of Graeme Carmichael's photos and
videos of the Clifton Band can be seen HERE. Clifton's Band Web site is HERE.
