It's Friday, so the students have
had a full day of school at their various schools in East Orange.
After school they come together at Cicely Tyson High School from
near and far, to get into their dress uniforms and begin tuning
up and practicing.

There is no time for the students
to go home for supper and come back again, so the Band Parents
serve them a meal out in the hall.

The hungry students grab a piece
of floor to sit on while they eat and socialize.

After eating, the students have
just enough time in the setting sunlight to go out to the court
yard and practice their half-time show. Last week they did not
march on the football field at Montclair, so this will be the
first half-time show of the season and they want it to be
Today the sun set at 6:47 PM. The
game started at 7:00 PM. Is this a problem? It was a problem for
the Band that had to march to and from the stadium after dark,
even with a police escort. It was a problem for the children who
marched back to the school with the band and a police escort, and
then had to walk home alone in the dark. Let us hope that it is
not an accident waiting to happen.
Reminder to parents: the sun sets
earlier and earlier all through the month of October. Check our calendar for sunset times.

Marching through the streets of
East Orange in the dark brings out crowds of people to watch the
Band march and then follow them to Paul Robeson Stadium to watch
the football game and to see and hear their Band perform. You can
see from the video that the Band doesn't hold anything back as
they put their hearts and souls into this impromptu parade.
Remember the months of work the
students did during their Summer
Band Camp? That was where it began for
many of them. This is where it all pays off as they show what
they have learned in one short month of learning and practice.
The "Tunnel Dance" is a
traditional ending to a Band event. The drumline forms up two
lines to make a "tunnel." The rest of the band marches
between the drums, dancing and showing off to the beat of the
drums. It doesn't matter if the football game was won or lost;
this is all about the Band and for their own enjoyment, since
they usually don't have an audience for this part.
Once they get into the school
building, many have difficulty taking off their uniforms and
letting go of the moment. After the exhilaration of being part of
such a talented group, it is a let-down to go back to wearing
ordinary clothes and parting company to go home separately.
Final Score: East Orange
Jaguars - 40 ; Seton Hall Prep - 44
