Earth Day Concert at City Hall

At about 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 22, 2010 (Earth Day) the Cicely Tyson Strings, under the direction of Riza Hequibal, set up on the steps leading to city hall and began a concert.

The concert was not advertised in advance, so the audience attendance was very sparse, but appreciative. The orchestra played several selections, some of which you can hear on the video below.

Cicely Tyson Jazz Band played next, under the direction of Raymond Johnson. By then it was 11:00 AM and many of the city hall workers came out of their offices to listen to the concert.

The percussion section stood behind the Jazz Band, so it was not easy to see them from below, but they clearly made their presence heard.

The concert concluded with a Mayoral Proclamation of Appreciation and Respect given to jazz saxophonist Kenny Garrett, who made a speech, but did not perform.

This was followed by the usual photo opportunity, with everyone posing beside Kenny Garrett. While the banner hanging over the main doors of city hall seemed to imply that this was an Earth Day event, not one word was mentioned about Earth Day.
