Walk-A-Mile for Infant
Immunization
This was a joint event sponsored
by both the City of Orange and the City of East Orange on
Saturday, April 24th, 2010. The various parade units gathered in
Orange Park at 10:00 AM. Other organizations and newspapers
covered the event in general, so our report will focus on the two
(friendly) rival bands, the Orange High School Marching Tornadoes
Band and East Orange Unified Marching Band (from several East
Orange Schools). Link to Local Talk

From Orange Park, the Parade
marched down Central Avenue to East Orange General Hospital, a
distance of about a mile.

The Parade turned at Arlington
Avenue and marched down to the East Orange General Hospital
Parking Lot.

Once they arrived at the parking
lot, they took their positions and waited for their turn to
perform.

The Orange High School Marching
Tornadoes came into the parking lot last. In the background you
can see the East Orange Campus High School ROTC, and there were
many other marching units represented, but this report is just
focusing on the two bands. We will link to other reports as they
come on-line.

Mayor Robert L. Bowser of East
Orange and other officials from the various Health Organizations
gave speeches and issued proclamations.

Then the Orange High School
Marching Tornadoes Band and Drum Line performed for the audience
and honored guests. The Video of their performance is below.

Now it was the turn of the East
Orange Unified Marching Band to perform (see video below). Mr.
Goode, the director, reminded the audience that they will see
more of the same on the evening of Saturday, May 1st, at Cicely Tyson Schools
Benefit Band Concert "Music Under the Stars."

Afterwards, the two bands squared off their
drumlines against one another in the parking lot for a Drumline
Showdown. Orange Drumline went first. You can see the videos of
the showdown below. Please take the poll and tell us which
Drumline was better, in your opinion.

Both Drumlines put on a good show and a large
crowd gathered around them to cheer them on. The Showdown took 25
minutes, and YouTube has a rule allowing only videos of 10
minutes length or less, so we broke the contest into three parts.

The Orange Band took a bus back to their school,
but East Orange walked back to Cicely Tyson School from the
Hospital. Special thanks to the East Orange Campus School ROTC
members who provided crossing guards and security for the walk
home. The band received a pep-talk from their leaders, thanking
them for their hard work and reminding them that they would have
to learn new "moves" if they were to continue to keep
up with The Orange Tornadoes in the future.
