The Band has moved out to the
front entrance of the building on this, the last day of Summer
Band Camp in East Orange. This afternoon's rehearsal proves they
still have a great deal to improve, but it also shows how far
they have come since they began three weeks ago. Today's
conductor is alumnus Deshaun Hinson.
Today Mr. Rasheed Sheffield (on
left), Marching Band Director of Malcolm X Shabazz High School
stopped by to lend support to Mr. Frederick Goode (on right) and
the East Orange Unified Marching Band. Both schools' Band Camps
are in full swing, rehearsing daily to teach new members,
recruit, and promote their respective bands.
Many know the two bands to be city rivals, however, both continue
to support one another. The need for support is greater now, more
than ever. In addition to budget cuts, school closings, and the
introduction of Charter schools, fewer members are turning out
We discussed ways we could support one anther's programs, and
methods to keep kids interested in band.
In the past, Mr. Sheffield has supplied the East Orange Band with
loaner equipment to use in our trip to the Nationals. We also
share college recruitment information and performance venues.

Late in the day, we are still
organizing for our trip. This time it is sorting out the trophy
shirts that will be worn by staff, staff assistants, and section
leaders so they can be identified at great distances across a
field. So much still to do, and so little time left!
