The members of the East Orange
Unified Marching Band showed up on Saturday, March 30th, 2013 to
assist the City of East Orange with its annual Easter Egg Hunt in
You can easily spot the Band
volunteers in the photos because they are wearing either yellow
or lime green T-shirts from previous summer Band Camps.
While Band volunteers scattered
and hid eggs all over the park, the Easter Bunny put in an
appearance to keep the children from rushing out and picking up
eggs before the official hunt could begin.
The face painters were kept busy
decorating all the children who wanted to look like Easter Eggs
for the day.
There was also a visit from Bo-Bo
the clown, who arrived just as lunch was being served.
For lunch, there were free hot
dogs for everyone, cooked and served up by volunteer workers.
Many city businesses contributed food and prizes for the event.
If someone will send me a list, I will include the donors here,
because they were saving the taxpayers a lot of money.
Just before the hunt began, a
second Easter Bunny showed up to share hugs with the children.
When the word was given, the
children and their parents hustled to pick up as many eggs as
they could find for their baskets. The parents had just as much
fun as the children and the Band volunteers had fun, too.
The eggs were not just out on the
grassy field, but for the older children, some had been hidden in
high places around the edges of the park, so everyone had a fair
chance to find their quota of eggs.
The only sad part was the
political speeches from candidates for Mayor and City Council,
who didn't have the good grace to just let the day belong to the
children and their parents. If you agree that it was in bad taste
to politicize this event, you can tell them so on their Facebook pages if you want.
