African American Heritage Parade
Newark, NJ 05/26/13
This really begins on Friday, May
24th when the uniforms return from the cleaner and have to be
organized to be handed out to the students when they arrive for
the parade on Sunday. Band Parent volunteers work with alumni and
students to get everything in order.
On Sunday morning, all that
alumnus Denzel Thompson needs to do is record which student gets
which uniform parts and send the student on to rehearsal in the
As students arrive fully dressed
for the parade, Allan Theodore gets them tuned up and then
conducts a brief rehearsal of some of the music they will be
playing for the event.
The Band welcomes Professor Allen
Gardner, Director of Bands for Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, who will be auditioning seniors for scholarships to
attend Cheyney next fall. The auditions will just make a busy day
that much busier!
Drum captain and senior Isaac
Davis will be auditioning for Professor Gardner on two
instruments, the drum (of course!) and also on the xylophone. In
order to include photos of all the seniors that auditioned, we
will post tiny head-photos on this page and link them to a
separate page with the full-sized photo of the audition for their
"memory books" or resumes.
The students get off the bus and
line up to march into Lincoln Park for the start of the parade.
Photographer Al-Quadir Marsh takes one last photo, and then
dashes off like Superman, to find a secret spot where he can
change his clothes.
The photo on the left shows how
he was dressed when he was taking photographs of the Band all
morning. The photo on the right shows what he has transformed
into: a Central High School Trumpet player. Now, as soon as his
uncle Fred lets go of him, he will be off to find his Central
High Band and will rejoin the East Orange Unified Marching Band
after he performs with the Central Band.

Meanwhile, the Unified Marching
Band forms up in the park and prepares for the annual Band Battle
with other school bands who wish to challenge them for bragging rights.

Suddenly, Mr. Goode gets tapped
on the shoulder and turns around to see East Orange Mayoral
Candidate Kevin Taylor keeping his word to the Band
and here in Newark to support them, as promised. Kevin has also
promised that, win or lose the election, he will continue to be a
Band supporter now that he has seen for himself how the Band
represents the City of East Orange at community events like this.
In return, the Band is committed to supporting his various Civic
Events whenever he asks them to participate.
