The Theatre Department of Cicely
Tyson High School is preparing for a production of the musical Pippin (Book by Roger
O. Hirson, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz ) in April of
2013. The play revolves around a traveling troupe of performers,
and it begins and ends with displays of circus magic tricks,
juggling and unicycle riding as the cast sings "Magic To Do" and the Finale: "Magic Shows and Miracles ."
Mr. Goode has brought along two
unicycles and the assistance of Wiz Kid
Qua-Fiki (aka Al-Quadir Marsh) who
mastered unicycle riding in the Spring of
2008 and who is well qualified to pass
on what he has learned.
For about a month, the students
will learn every possible way to fall off a unicycle before they
finally learn the ultimate secret of staying on and riding around
the stage. They have to overcome their natural instincts to hold
on to something safe, to avoid looking down, and learn to believe
in themselves before it will happen.
The Wiz Kid record time for
learning to unicycle is eleven days, recorded by Wiz
Kid Rider in the Fall of 2008. It
remains to be seen if any of these students will beat that
record, but if they don't give up on themselves, they will able
to ride the unicycle, unassisted, after about 30 days of
Al-Quadir Marsh teaches Floyd to juggle scarves.
The easiest way to learn juggling
is with light-weight juggling scarves that float slowly
downwards, giving one time to catch them before they reach the
ground. Even so, the skills require disregarding everything you think
you know about juggling and teaching your brain to take over the
job of tossing and catching without actually looking at the
individual items being tossed around.
Juggling with scarves only takes
a few days to begin to master. Juggling heavier objects takes a
little longer, since the objects rise and fall faster, but in the
end, the students learn to trust themselves and what once seemed
impossible becomes possible.
We'll come back to check on their
progress from time to time and see what they have learned.
performance dates: April 12, 13, and 14, 2013.
